UNSCARRED

More than twenty years of connection

01 Introduction

This article is part of Chinese Noise, a living archive exploring Chinese identity, underground music and cultural memory through 25 years of Hong Kong Violence.

For this edition, we sat down with Unscarred, whose connection with the HKV family stretches back more than two decades.

From early vinyl releases alongside Akira to later releasing Overdrive Brains on HKV, his story reflects a long-standing connection to the underground.

02 Finding HKV

Unscarred’s connection with HKV began long before social media or streaming platforms.

"It was more a connection with Akira than with HKV, back in 2004."

A few years later, that relationship turned musical. In 2006, Unscarred and Akira released tracks together on vinyl through N.E. Tunes Records.

"That was my first experience with music production and releasing music together with Akira on the same vinyl. It introduced me to the world of underground music."

More than twenty years later, the connection remains intact. In January 2021, Unscarred released his EP Overdrive Brains on HKV (HKV DIGEE 009).

03 My Favorite HKV Track

When asked about his favorite HKV release, the answer comes without hesitation.

NUKOM – Fuck Bass (HKV 001)

"My first HKV vinyl. This track is exactly the reason why I started playing underground music back then."

For Unscarred, the record represents the beginning of everything that followed.

04 Opening The HKV Stage

Opening the HKV Stage at Dominator carries special weight for Unscarred.

"Wow, it’s a fantastic feeling to be able to open the HKV stage at Dominator. It’s also a responsibility, I think, because you’re the first artist to play and people expect to hear the best."

For him, opening the HKV Stage represents a personal milestone built through years of dedication to underground music.

"The DJ set I’ll be playing will be a sort of summary of all the musical experience I’ve gained over the years. I’d love for the audience to relive the same feelings I experienced when I used to go dancing at raves 20 or 25 years ago."
05 Learning From The Generations Before

Having followed HKV across multiple eras, Unscarred sees a clear thread running through the label’s history.

"I believe that anyone who has grown up following HKV has had wonderful experiences. All the members possess a wealth of musical background and keep their sights constantly fixed on the future and musical evolution."

He remains confident about what lies ahead:

"I hope, and I’m sure, that HKV will only reach greater heights."
06 What HKV Means To Me

For Unscarred, HKV has always represented an alternative to the ordinary.

"Everything HKV offers is something alternative — never the usual boring or repetitive fare you’d find at just any other party."

He points to Fish & Rice as a perfect example of the kind of alternative experience HKV continues to create — something you simply won’t encounter at a normal party.

07 Favorite HKV Merch

Unscarred doesn’t single out just one item. For him, the value lies in what the merch represents.

"In general I like all merch I’ve from HKV. All T-shirts and caps are memories for me. Experiences."

Still, one piece stands out:

"My personal HKV Unscarred T-shirt is my favorite."
08 One Word

If he had to describe HKV in just one word?

UNDERGROUND
09 A Message To HKV

After more than two decades of memories, releases and experiences connected to HKV, his message is simple:

"25 years of chaos, dedication, and keeping the underground alive. RESPECT!"
